Business process maturity

Business process maturity measures how developed and reliable an organisation’s processes are, on a scale from undocumented to continuously optimized.

The scale runs from Level 0 (the process isn’t even documented yet) through Level 5 (the process hits its targets consistently and the targets themselves keep getting tighter as the team improves). Most organisations sit somewhere in the middle: documented but inconsistently followed, or followed but not yet measured against real goals. Knowing where a process sits on the scale matters because it determines what to do next – an undocumented process needs mapping, not a KPI dashboard.

Maturity is also uneven across an organisation – a company can run one process at Level 4 and another, right next to it, at Level 1.
