Process documentation
Process documentation is the complete set of information people need to execute a process consistently – more than a process map, it also covers policies, checklists, roles, and the tools involved.
Teams often use “process documentation” to mean just the map, but a map only shows the flow of work – it doesn’t say how each step should be done, what rules apply, or what a correct result looks like. A simple test for whether documentation is actually doing its job: can someone with reasonable knowledge of the company find it, understand it, and complete the process correctly without asking a colleague? If not, the process is running on tribal knowledge, which is where inconsistency and rework come from.
Good documentation pays off well beyond compliance – it’s what makes onboarding faster and bottlenecks visible, because “how we think we work” and “how we actually work” get written down as the same thing.
